The Signal
The Signal is an online publication that encourages the exploration of unconventional career paths and creative passions at Penn. We seek to inspire others to live deliberately and seek out “the signal” they are meant to find.
Since its launch in February 2017, our site has accumulated 90K+ page views and 18K+ readers. We have continued to grow the engagement with the student body and our impact across Penn through new projects, content, and in-person events.
As the “first employee” of the team, I’ve led The Signal’s growth in Content and Business Development.
While managing our content creation pipeline, I also published my interviews with several impressive entrepreneurs, including Bing Chen, Jay Shek, & Curtis Lee. In our first year, we collectively interviewed 31 people from 22 industries.
I also led the production and marketing of our first fundraising project: a 200-card, Penn version of Cards Against Humanity, called Squirrels Without Morality.
In line with our “unconventional” mindset, we wanted to offer a way for peers to de-stress and laugh about Penn’s often stressful culture.
In a few short months, I headed our efforts to run surveys, source content from the Penn community, design the product, secure a manufacturer, collect orders, and market the game.
Creating a lot of buzz, we sold out of all 250 pre-order copies. It was thrilling to execute such an unprecedented idea at Penn.
Looking forward, I’m excited to serve as The Signal’s Co-Director for the 2018-2019 year. [Edit: the 2018-2019 year brought about many changes! Updates soon to be added]
I joined The Signal as a Freshman who had entrepreneurial ambitions but felt the overwhelming pressures of more traditional career paths at Wharton. Thus, I’m extremely happy and proud to work with a team who seeks to democratize information and resources for our readers to explore numerous other possibilities.
Publishing more data-driven articles and resources (like this one), hosting more live events (like our Amazon HQ2 case competition), creating version 2 of Squirrels Without Morality, and re-launching the website are in our plans.

Update!
In 2018-2019, The Signal embarked and completed several new projects. It was a bit scary to be at the helm of the organization at first, but I was always energized being around motivated peers.
In addition to growing our team to over 25 members, here are some of the highlights of the year:
We launched the Anti-Resume Project. Through a mock LinkedIn format, we celebrate the unconventional successes and failures of Penn students and alumni. With almost 20 Anti-Resumes in our 2019 edition, we sought to normalize the conversation around failure at Penn. Our in-person Failure at Penn event brought together 10 notable graduating seniors and over 200 attendees to share stories on adversity at Penn. We also interviewed a dozen graduating seniors for a video shared at the event and beyond.
We launched the re-print and expansion pack of Squirrels Without Morality, while also testing out an apparel/merchandise line poking fun at Penn face culture.
We launched an anonymous Q&A forum, for students and by students: RealTalk Penn
We continued our interviews and increased the number of collaborations we did with other clubs (e.g. events with Penn Abroad and PennApps).
I am incredibly proud to be a part of The Signal team and community. In the 2019-2020 year, in addition to being the social chair and go-to person for tips on how to manage projects, I have also assisted with the 2020 edition of the Anti-Resume Project, as I am a graduating senior myself. :) The opportunities and experiences I have had as part of The Signal have truly contributed to my success and happiness at Penn. I am very grateful.
